Nomination Guidelines
1. To be eligible to participate in the Governor's School a nominee must be:
2. The maximum number of nominees permitted each high school is given in the following table:
Any school that does not receive the appropriate number of forms may duplicate the forms or contact the Governor's School office for additional forms.
3. We strongly urge that you use a variety of means to widely publicize the Governor's School so that all interested, qualified students will have an opportunity to obtain information and guidance.
4. Each school is encouraged to submit a full slate of nominees. Since the number of gifted and talented students in a given school will far exceed the number of nominations allowed, open competitions that include committee interviews are highly desirable. We recommend that each school form a screening committee comprised of teachers, counselors and administrators to search for, interview and nominate qualified and motivated students for the Governor's School.
5. Please make sure that each nominated student receives a packet including the following items:
6. The essay questions required in the nomination form are to be prepared without assistance. Essays are scrutinized carefully by the selection panel. Their thoughtful preparation cannot be overemphasized.
7. The Congressional, House and Senate districts are determined by the student's home address and not the high school's.
8. The nominee should select those who are to serve as references. For convenience in processing, we request that completed reference forms be mailed by the coordinator along with all other nomination materials.
9. Nominees should be advised that the limited number of places available dictates a high degree of selectivity. Nomination is not tantamount to selection.
10. The Governor's School program fee is $1,000. Because we do not want financial hardship to prevent any student from participating in Governor's School, there is a limited amount of financial aid available. Only those students that request a financial aid form should be provided a form. The financial aid form should be completed by the student's parents/guardian and returned to the guidance counselor or sent directly to the Governor's School office.
11. As a final step, each coordinator is asked to ensure all nomination materials are completed. Please make sure that each nomination includes:
The most common error on nomination materials is missing signatures. Make sure that all forms include the appropriate signatures of the student, guardian, teacher and guidance counselor.
12. On the Nomination Coversheet please list the nominees in rank order, with your top ranked nominee first. Attach all checks to the Nomination Coversheet, place on top of your completed packet and send all materials to:
13. In the event that you do not have any nominees please return the Nomination Coversheet to the above address or fax to (843) 953-1824.
14. All materials must be postmarked by January 31, 2008.
15. For more information, contact Maria Mansfield Richardson, Associate Director, at the Governor's School office: (843) 953-6592 or guvie@cofc.edu.
Each high school should select one guidance counselor to serve as the Governor’s School Coordinator.
